‘QMG greeted me with “Why are you not a general? I want a general and I thought you were going to become one.” I told him the Military Secretary’s Department had apparently one gear, a very slow one, and they apparently kept on losing the papers. So QMG told de Pass [his Military Assistant] to do something about it. Apparently his effort, coupled with Philipe’s persistency, moved something somewhere as later in the day Philipe told me that someone in the Military Secretary’s office had rung and said the King had agreed and it was now an accomplished fact; and that I was now a Major-General and the War Office would announce it in due course.’
